When a child learns to read they start by recognising the letters and then they build sounds and words with these. From this point they then learn to read the sentences by moving their eyes across the page from left to right. To successfully learn to speed read you need to be able to grab a whole line and process it at once. This sounds difficult, but with practice it can become second nature. If you are driving behind a lorry and you see the words 'long vehicle' on the back of it, you do not actually read them you recognise them. There are several techniques which you need to master. First of all you will have to find some text to practice with. Before you do anything else you will need a pencil, ruler and white piece of paper.

Now draw a line down the middle of the text in pencil. This is the line our eye should follow down the page. Since you're teaching your brain to absorb the text as lines not words, you want to be able to focus the mind on one line at a time.

Place your blank piece of paper over the text so that only the top line is showing. Now focus on the pencil line you have drawn. If you are lucky you may have read one word, the word which your line goes through. Suppose that you have simply absorbed the whole of the understanding of that line of text. Incredible isn't it. This is how many people now read.

There are many courses available on ways to speed read, some are great, but the rest may teach you nothing. The best courses will be ones which will go through the techniques with you. When you learn to speed read the course is often as good as the people attending. If the course is targeted at people who are driven and keen to learn then the lecturer will be keen to teach them. If it is an introductory course you may discover that at the end of it your knowledge of the skills is barely improved at all.

A beneficial method to choose the best course to learn to speed read is to look at who the marketing is targeting. It is also a good idea to choose a course which offers some pre course preparation. This may only be reading a few background on the lecturers or even doing some tests to establish your current reading speed. The crucial thing is that many people are put off by having to work, so if the course requires work up front it will be a way to discard those who are not truly interested in learning.
